Andrew Gantzer, Assistant Principal Double Bass

Andrew Gantzer joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as Assistant Principal Bass in 2023 at the age of 22. As a student of Harold Robinson and Rex Surany at The Juilliard School, he quickly made his mark as one of the most sought-after bassists in the country, frequently playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as a substitute musician. A native of Centreville, Virginia, Andrew began his studies at the age of nine and was later a participant in the National Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Fellowship program as a student of Jeffrey Weisner. With access to many orchestral, chamber, and solo performance opportunities, he quickly progressed as an artist as he learned to combine technical prowess on the bass with continuous development of musical expression. In addition to his studies at Juilliard, Andrew has enjoyed spending his summers as a Keston MAX fellow at the Music Academy of the West and as a Tanglewood Music Center fellow. When he is not playing bass, Andrew can be found lifting weights, swimming, or playing disc golf.
