This week, New York was swept into a frenzy of Mets Mania in anticipation of Major League Baseball's 111th World Series. On October 27, the NY Mets would face the Kansas City Royals for Game 1 in their first World Series appearance since 2000. One particularly dedicated Mets fan (and author of the blog "Perfect Pitch"), MET Orchestra oboist Susan Spector, had the idea to whip up some hometown spirit at that other Met - the Metropolitan Opera.

Welcome to the 2014-2015 Season with the MET Orchestra!

We are unbelievably excited to be back. This is our first week of preseason, which means that we're rehearsing Le Nozze di Figaro and our first Carnegie Hall concert with our music director, James Levine. This author will be playing cymbals on Mahler's Symphony No. 9.

To celebrate the upcoming season, we've worked with the great opera magazine Opera21 to create an amazing issue features us, the MET Orchestra Musicians!

Who's on First Chair?

Who's on First Chair?

Susan Spector has played Oboe in the MET Orchestra since 1992. She is also known through the orchestra as a baseball fanatic and blogger. Her family, entirely comprised of opera fanatics, come to operas often, and her daughter is the famous @msoperageek on twitter.

I’m not in on the Metropolitan Opera Stagehands’ NCAA pool.  I won’t be constructing a bracket nor could I tell you who the top-seeded college basketball teams are at this point.  But I am awfully proud of and have enjoyed following, for a second year in a row now, the outstanding performance of the men’s basketball team at my alma mater, Wichita State University.

Wozzeck at the MET - a history

Garry Spector has been attending Metropolitan Opera performances for the last 41 years and has attended over 900 MET performances to date.  Since 1995, Garry has been married to the MET Orchestra’s 2nd Oboist, Susan Spector.  Garry and Susan were introduced in 1994 by former MET soprano Judith Blegen and her husband, Raymond Gniewek, who served as the MET Orchestra’s Concertmaster for 43 years (1957-2000).  Susan and Garry are the parents of Melanie, who sang for seven years in the MET Children’s Chorus.  Garry is also a proud member of the MET’s Major Gifts program.  When not at the opera, Garry is the Senior Vice President of Fibertek, Inc., a defense contractor located in Herndon, VA.

 In honor of Wozzeck’s return to the MET stage, Garry brings you this history of the MET’s long association with Berg’s masterpiece.
