Humans of the MET: Nancy Wu and Leigh Mesh

MET Orchestra violist Katherine Anderson has been interviewing orchestra members to capture a snapshot of the many personalities of the Met as they talk about their lives both in and out of music. Here she speaks with the husband-and-wife duo of Associate Concertmaster Nancy Wu and Acting Principal Bass Leigh Mesh. Nancy and Leigh joined the Orchestra in 1988 and 1993, respectively.

Katherine Anderson: What do you enjoy the most about playing in the MET Orchestra together?

Nancy & Leigh: Sharing the musical experience, spending time together in the intermissions, and talking about our favorite operas, conductors, and singers

When we have solos we support each other and can give each other helpful, honest feedback. We also work out who gets up with the kids (ages 17 and 12) in the morning based on our schedules and try to give each other opportunities to get caught up on sleep. Another thing we love is that we've been able to have dinner together with our kids almost every night - that is, until they had their own busy activities! We also loved being able to take our kids on tour with us...since we both went, we had to figure out a way to bring them along. They still talk about our tours to Japan!
